Thooyamalli Rice is a traditional indigenous rice variety from Tamil Nadu, India. It is a pest resilient, mildly aromatic medium-grain rice whose white colour resembles blooming jasmine flowers, giving rise to the name Thooyamalli ("Thooya" meaning pure and "Malli" meaning jasmine).
This heritage rice is valued for its soft texture, subtle sweetness and excellent digestibility. Suitable for all age groups, it serves as an everyday table rice and forms an important component of traditional South Indian cuisine.
Thooyamalli Rice is considered one of the most versatile rice varieties of South India. Available commonly in parboiled and semi-polished forms, it is extensively used in everyday cooking as well as festive preparations.
Thooyamalli Rice received Geographical Indication (GI) status in the year 2025. This recognition highlights its uniqueness, regional identity and traditional agricultural heritage.
Thooyamalli Rice should not be confused with Jasmine Rice, as both are entirely different rice varieties despite similarities in appearance and mild fragrance.
Growing awareness regarding indigenous foods, healthy diets and traditional agriculture is creating new opportunities for Thooyamalli Rice.
